For Release: September 20, 2010 Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa Celebrates 20 Years of Service to Homebound Elders WHAT: Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa is celebrating 20 years of helping fund nutritious meals for at-risk homebound elders this month. The County Board of Supervisors will recognize the charitable nonprofit at its regular meeting this Tuesday. Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa raises and contributes more than $950,000 each year to subsidize 300,000 nutritious daily meals and 15,000 emergency meals delivered to more than 2,000 homebound elders by the county Meals on Wheels Program. WHEN: The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 21 in the Board Chambers, 651 Pine Street, Martinez WHO: Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa is a coalition of all organizations involved in providing Meals on Wheels services to homebound elders through the Senior Nutrition Program of the Contra Costa Health Services Public Health Division. WHY: Prior to the formation of Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa in 1990, the County Meals on Wheels program had a waiting list for services of 50 to 150 homebound elders each day. Since 1990, Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa has raised almost $4.5 million to subsidize more than two million daily meals for the County Meals on Wheels Program.
