Our Mission

We support homebound elders to maintain their health and dignity, and to live independently in the comfort and security of their own homes.

Our Purpose

Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa, Inc. seeks to bridge a widening gap between stagnant government funding levels for Meals on Wheels services, and the ever increasing population of homebound elders in our county.

Our Challenge

Our primary service population, Contra Costa County senior citizens aged 85 and older, is projected to increase 42% between the years 2000 and 2010. With government funding unable to keep pace, Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa must find the resources to meet this rapidly expanding need.

Our History

Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa, Inc. was founded in 1990, as a countywide coalition of public and private agencies, citizen advisory groups and private sector representatives dedicated to providing Meals on Wheels services to homebound elders in our county. We are the only agency in Contra Costa County raising funds specifically to provide meals for homebound elders through the countywide Meals on Wheels network.

Our first year we managed to subsidize 1,300 additional meals delivered to frail homebound elders throughout the county. Thanks to generous contributions from individuals, groups and foundations, we will subsidize over 150,000 additional nutritious meals this year delivered to nearly 550 additional frail homebound Meals on Wheels clients each day, or nearly half of all Meals on Wheels delivered in Contra Costa County.

Recently, we were one of 16 programs out of 163 statewide entries to receive a Certificate of Merit for innovative programming in the 2003 Challenge Awards of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC).

Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa, Inc. is a California Nonprofit corporation recognized as a charitable organization under Section 501 c (3) of U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Our Federal tax ID number is 68-0231350.
